The sun has radiance because it contains its power. Its reliability makes possible life on earth. The sun is worthy of emulation; it sets a high standard.
It is not so difficult to endure bullets in your chest; but it is extremely difficult to work daily on a schedule, to fight with yourself at every moment, and in this way, to purify yourself.
— Mahatma Gandhi
To summer’s radiant heights
The sun in shining majesty ascends;
It takes my human feeling
Into its own wide realms of space.
Within my own inner being stirs
Presentiment which heralds dimly,
You shall in future know:
A godly being now has touched you.
–Rudolf Steiner, The Calendar of the Soul, Tenth Week (June 9-15)
Now what I’m trying to talk about is a deeper understanding of the pattern in which we live, and if you understand that, it suddenly hits you so that you feel, right in your guts, this new kind of existence that is NOT yourself alone facing an alien world, but yourself as an expression of the world in the same way as the wave is the expression of the ocean.
This is a cross section of a single blade of grass, stained for the microscope. The smiley faces are the channels that the water is drawn up through. It was just taken the other day at the EM lab Will works with. I’m just fascinated by it!
What in your life is calling you?
When all the noise is silenced,
the meetings adjourned,
the lists laid aside,
and the wild iris blooms by itself
in the dark forest,
what still pulls on your soul?
In the silence between your heartbeats
hides a summons.
Do you hear it?
Name it, if you must,
or leave it forever nameless,
but why pretend it is not there?
“We can never have enough of nature. We must be refreshed by the sight of inexhaustible vigor, vast and titanic features, the sea-coast with its wrecks, the wilderness with its living and its decaying trees, the thunder-cloud, and the rain.”
If you were awake, you would understand that you were the whole universe, pretending, projecting itself at a point called here and now, in the form of the human organism. And you would understand that very clearly, not just as an idea, but as an actual vivid sensation, just the same way you know you’re sitting in this room.
